The Endocannabinoid System

How your body processes cannabinoids.

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people the first time they hear it: your body makes its own cannabinoids, and it has a dedicated network for using them. It’s called the endocannabinoid system, or ECS, and it was only discovered in the early 1990s — which means researchers are still mapping out everything it does. But the broad strokes are well understood, and they’re the key to why hemp interacts with the body the way it does.

Think of the ECS as one of your body’s balancing systems. Its job is to help keep things steady — a state biologists call homeostasis — across a lot of everyday processes.

The three moving parts

The ECS has three main components working together.

Endocannabinoids are molecules your body produces on its own. The two best-studied are anandamide and 2-AG. Unlike some signaling molecules that are stored up in advance, these are made on demand, when and where the body needs them.

Receptors are the docking points these molecules attach to. There are two primary types. CB1 receptors are concentrated in the brain and central nervous system. CB2 receptors are found more in the peripheral tissues and immune system. The location of these receptors is a big reason different cannabinoids feel different.

Enzymes clean up afterward. Once an endocannabinoid has done its job, enzymes like FAAH and MAGL break it back down so the signal doesn’t linger longer than needed. Made on demand, used, then cleared — it’s an efficient little loop.

What it’s thought to influence

Because ECS receptors are spread throughout the body rather than clustered in one spot, researchers associate the system with a wide range of everyday functions — things like mood, appetite, how we experience rest, and the body’s general sense of balance. The ECS doesn’t run any single one of these on its own; it’s more of a background regulator, nudging things back toward equilibrium.

That “everywhere at once” quality is exactly what makes the ECS interesting to study, and also what makes it complex. Science is still working out the details.

Where hemp comes in

The cannabinoids in hemp — like CBD and the small amount of THC found in hemp-derived products — are called phytocannabinoids, meaning they come from a plant rather than your body. Because their structure is similar to the endocannabinoids you already make, they’re able to interact with the same system.

They don’t all interact the same way, though. THC, for instance, binds directly to CB1 receptors, which is associated with its noticeable effects. CBD works more indirectly and doesn’t bind to those receptors in the same fashion. This difference in how each cannabinoid engages the ECS is the reason CBD and THC produce such different experiences — a topic worth its own article.

The short version

Your body has a signaling system, the ECS, built around cannabinoids it produces itself, and it’s involved in helping keep a range of everyday processes in balance. Hemp-derived cannabinoids can interact with that same system because they’re chemically similar to the ones already there. Understanding this framework is the foundation for making sense of everything else in the hemp world.
